Late 1960s, possibly 1967. Made in Japan Space Explorer robot by Yonezawa, initially looks like a rather uninteresting oblong television set box, but switch it on and watch the transformation to a walking robot with alternating flashing lights behind the green visor, a mesh screen in the body drops down to reveal the lenticular effect astronaut pilot and the arms rise from the recess in body. This is the red version, other versions are dark grey and some have a secondary button on the top of the head to switch it on, in addition to the switch on the lower rear battery compartment where the two D cell batteries are fitted. Rare to find in fully operational condition, it has a complicated internal mechanism which is fragile and difficult to repair. The box artwork is interesting showing the robot in the closed TV set position and a lunar landscape scene, typical of 1960s. although the box that came with my SE has a UK Woolworths store price label of ú3.25p which is the new UK decimal currency which started in 1971 - check out my YouTube videos to see this one and others in action.
